United States Merchant Marine Academy

Patrick Fontana ’71 was a four-year letter winner for the Kings Point swim team. Recruited as a prep school All-American, Fontana helped bring attention to USMMA swimming on the national level when he arrived through Vickery Gate. He set nine different Academy records during his career and broke those records numerous times in four seasons. Fontana, who specialized in the freestyle, butterfly and individual medley, was a three-time Athletic Association of Long Island Colleges Champion in 1968, as well as a 1967 ECAC and 1968 Metropolitan Conference Champion. He served as team captain his final season as a member of the squad and then was a student-assistant during his First Class year.
