John A. Bailey Jr. ‘78 was a four-year letterwinner in swimming and diving. He served as a co-captain in 1977-78 for a team which went undefeated and won the conference championship. Bailey was the first Mariner swimmer to ever set a NCAA national record for any event when he did it in the 400 individual medley back in 1975. Bailey was named an All-American in the 200 and 400 individual medleys and held several other USMMA records. He also acted as an assistant to the coach, especially in 1978, when he directed many of the workouts and chose team  lineups for several events.
