John Duclos ’80 was a four-year letterwinner and team captain for the USMMA sailing team and was a member of the 1979 Intercollegiate Yacht Racing Association National Champion Kings Point Dinghy Team, the first-ever Team of Distinction to be inducted into the USMMA Athletics Hall of Fame in 2016. His performance was vital in bringing home the first national championship for the Academy – he excelled under pressure for three days and rallied in the final race to help secure the championship. In addition to the national championship, he also led the Mariners to a third place finish in the ICYRA Collegiate Team Racing Championships. Duclos was named an ICYRA All-American in 1979 and 1980 and was also a three-time All-Conference sailor in 1978, 1979 and 1980. A fierce competitor known for his sportsmanship, mentorship, integrity and versatility, Duclos competed for the Mariners in Dinghies (two-man), Single-Handed and Team Racing throughout his time at USMMA. Duclos was a great teacher and was not afraid to share the secrets to his success with his teammates.
