Dennis Fitzgerald ’81 competed on the indoor track & field team all four years while attending the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, and was also a two-year member of both the outdoor track & field team and the football team. A star in the throwing pit, Dennis was named the team’s Most Valuable Performer twice during outdoor season, once as a Plebe and then again during his First Class year after setting Academy records in the discus throw. While suiting up for the Blue & Gray, Dennis became the third midshipman ever to qualify for the IC4A Championships and the second midshipman ever to qualify for the NCAA Division II National Championships. During his senior season, he served as the Mariners’ Team Captain and set the program’s discus throw record, which still stands as the Academy’s best mark at the time of his induction.
