The 1973 Kings Point Soccer Team had enjoyed the program’s best season to date in the 30-year history of the academy. The Mariners set many records during the team’s first undefeated regular season, finishing with a record of 12-0-1. In postseason play, Kings Point received its first invitation to the NCAA Tournament, but lost in the first round to national-powerhouse Adelphi University. Additional records set throughout the year included most victories in one season, most total goals scored, most goals scored by a player in one game, most goals in a season by one player, which ranked fourth in New York State, and most shutouts by a goalkeeper in a season, which ranked second in the Metropolitan Conference. The team continued the success of the winning season in 1972 to become the undefeated team of 1973. A winning streak that began in the 1972 season was continued by the 1973 Team and totaled 20 games. The success of the 1973 Mariners was based upon both the outstanding performances of its players and the leadership of Head Coach Robert Wernersbach. An impressive total of six members of the team were honored by the Metropolitan Conference at the Division II Awards Dinner held in New York City at the end of the year – five players were selected to the Metropolitan Conference All-Star Team (with one additionally named to the New York State All-Star Team) and, based upon voting by his peer coaches, Coach Wernersbach was named the “Coach of the Year.” It was truly a special season for the King Point Soccer Team.
