Derrick Shirley ’87 was a four-year starter and team captain for the Kings Point basketball team in the mid-1980s. A dominant presence in the paint, he graduated as the Academy’s all-time leader in blocked shots with 296—more than twice the total of the next closest player—and holds the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 7th-best single-season block totals in program history. Derrick also ranks fourth all-time in rebounding with 813 boards, including the fifth-best single-season total, and is ninth in scoring with 1,400 points. A key contributor to the Academy’s first-ever 20-win team during the 1984-85 season, Derrick’s dominance in the paint and leadership on the floor cemented his place among Kings Point basketball legends.
