David McNeal ’04 was a four-year starter for the Merchant Marine football team in the early 2000’s. An exceptional athlete, McNeal was named team Defensive Rookie of the Year as a plebe before transitioning to the Mariner backfield. Running behind “The Rhinos,” his unprecedented offensive line, McNeal enjoyed phenomenal success in 2002. While also leading the team in receptions, he rushed for 1,890 yards on 318 carries, 18 touchdowns, 108 points, and five consecutive (six overall) 200-plus yard performances- all single-season Academy records. Named an All-American by three organizations in addition to the Freedom Conference and ECAC Player of the Year, McNeal propelled the Mariners to an 8-3 record and an appearance in the ECAC Bowl. He also ran track & field. On his last play as a Mariner, McNeal broke his arm scoring a touchdown against Coast Guard.
