James McGowan ’76 was a member of the 1973 USMMA soccer team that was inducted into the Athletics Hall of Fame in 2020. He was a four-year starting goalkeeper and well-respected team captain for Kings Point, leading the Mariners to four-straight winning seasons as well as a pair of Metropolitan Conference Championships in 1973 (12-0-1 record) and 1975 (12-1-1 record). McGowan also helped lead the squad to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in academy history in 1973, as well as an Eastern College Athletic Conference Co-Championship in 1975. He earned Met Conference All-Star honors in both seasons and was also the Team MVP in 1974. McGowan played a pivotal role in the program’s longest unbeaten streak of 23 games which lasted from 1972 until 1974. His 26 career shutouts remain the most in school history and were among the tops in NCAA history well after he graduated.
