Box Score KINGS POINT, N.Y. (March 22, 2025) – On Saturday, the USMMA men's tennis team opened the 2025 season with a nail-biting 4-3 home loss to non-conference opponent Baruch at the Brooks Stadium Courts. The Mariners start the year 0-1, while the Bearcats improve to 4-0 on the season with the victory.

Match File The Mariners took two of the three doubles flight to take 1-0 lead in the match. (Note: college tennis moved from all doubles matches counting as a point towards your box score to a team now having to win 2-of-3 doubles matches to earn a single doubles-point.

Freshmen Aaron  Zhao (Temple City, Calif.) and Fredrich Buquel (Mission, Texas) won their #2 doubles matchup by the final of 7-5, while the pair of sophomores Patrick Novotny (Fort Worth, Texas) and Lean Lewis (Fort Worth, Texas) picked up a 7-5 victory as well.

In singles play, the visitors won two of the first three flights, but that only brought the match even at 2-2. It was senior RJ Novak's (Yorktown, Va.) 6-1, 6-0, win at #5 that sandwiched the Bearcats' two victories.

Buquel's win at #4 singles, 6-1, 6-2, put Merchant Marine ahead by one, 4-3. However the final two matches to finish came via a pair of third-set tiebreakers in which Baruch claimed the victory.

Up next, the Mariners host Hunter College beginning at 4 p.m. this coming Wednesday, Aril 1, right back at the Brooks Stadium Courts.
