Mariners Kick Off 2024-25 Indoor Season At Army’s Crowell Open

WEST POINT, N.Y. (Dec. 7, 2024) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy men's track & field team kicked off the indoor season at Army's Crowell Open on Saturday. No team scores were kept at the event, but the Mariners had several noteworthy performances on the day.
 
Meet Links Kings Point had an excellent showing in the men's mile, picking up three top-ten finishes and two in the top 15. Senior Alex Burita (Annandale, Va.) headlined the effort, posting a personal best with a time of 4:39.95 and a sixth-place finish. Classmate Michael Lyon (Jacksonville, Fla.) and freshman Ethan Alliot (Sheridan, Wy.) crossed the tape in ninth and 10th with times of 4:59.25 and 5:03.82. Senior Blake Giannamore (Portland, Texas) registered a new personal best, finishing 11th and putting up a time of 5:05.57, while freshman John Piangozza (Smithtown, N.Y.) finished 14th with a time of 5:26.38.

Burita also recorded a personal best in the Men's 3000 meters with a time of 9:43.19 and a 12th place finish, while Lyon and Piangozza came across the finish line in 14th and 15th.

Freshmen Rolls Kerrigan (Battle Creek, Mich.) and Holden Collier (Mount Vernon, Wash.) both finished in the top 15 in the 200m, with Kerrigan crossing the finish line in 11th with a time of 24.70 while Collier finished 13th with a time of 24.99.
 
Senior Konnor Bye (Liberty Hill, Texas) racked up two top-ten finishes in the men's long jump and triple jump. Bye finished seventh in the long jump with a 6.74m (22'1.5") mark and ninth in the triple jump 13.38m (43' 10.75").
 
Freshman thrower Garrett Rees (Rising Sun, Md.) finished 10th in the shot put (11.38m - 37' 4").
 
The Mariners return to competition next Friday, Dec. 13, at the Fasttrack Season Opener in Staten Island, New York, at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex.
