Mariners Capture Sixth-Straight Skyline Men’s Cross Country Championship!

BETHPAGE, N.Y. (Nov. 3, 2024) – For the sixth-straight season, the USMMA men's cross country team has finished atop the Skyline Conference, as the Mariners won the 2024 Skyline Championship Meet on Sunday at nearby Bethpage Polo at the Park. Merchant Marine produced just 21 team points, well ahead of second-place St. Joseph's-Long Island (62 points) and third-place Farmingdale State (84).
 
Meet Link The Mariners boasted a total of seven All-Skyline performers in the meet, with four on the First Team with top-seven finishes and three more on the Second Team for finishing eighth-14th.
 
Fifth-year head coach Kayla Koelbel was selected by her fellow conference coaches as the 2024 Skyline Coach of the Year, as it was a straight-sweep for Koelbel on the men's side and the women's side.
 
Junior Luke Zwiesler (Colbert, Wash.) was the individual champion in the 8K race, finishing the course in 25:43.3. Zwiesler earned the Skyline Runner of the Year Award during the post-meet awards ceremony.
 
Classmate Silas Glynn (Folsom, Calif.) finished in second place with a time of 26:46.7, while sophomore Pierce Murray (Meridian, Idaho) and junior Alex Burita (Annandale, Va.) rounded out the Mariners' All-Skyline First Team runners with times of 27:23.9 and 27:24.4, good for fourth and fifth place, respectively.
 
The three USMMA harriers that earned Second Team honors were senior Michael Lyon (Jacksonville, Fla.), who placed ninth in 28:01.7, freshman Ethan Alliot (Sheridan, Wy.), who came in 13th with a time of 28:19.5 and junior Alex Virostek (Silver Lake, Ohio), who placed 14th in 28:23.9.
 
Up next, the Mariners will travel Stockton University on Saturday, Nov. 16, for the 2024 NCAA DIII Metro Region Championship Meet. Starting gun of the 8K race is scheduled for 11 a.m. at Stockton's home course on campus. More information on the Regional Championships can be found at this link.
