STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. (Oct. 18, 2016) – The USMMA women's volleyball team defeated the College of Staten Island in straight sets – 25-7, 25-14 and 25-15 – on Tuesday night at the Dolphins' Sports & Recreation Center. The victory improves the Mariners' record to 12-8 on the season, while CSI falls to 6-12 in defeat.
 
Junior Dominique Pope (Silver Spring, Md.) just missed out on a double-double with a match-high nine kills to go along with a team-high 10 digs. Freshman Kyleigh Kappas (Parker, Colo.) dished out 28 assists in the victory.  A trio of Mariners chipped in with five kills apiece – senior Jordy Macbeth (Orlando, Fla.), sophomore Kate Lefler (Norman, Okla.) and junior Kayla Gleason (Sound Beach, N.Y.).
 
Kappas and Gleason both had four service aces on the night, while sophomore Hannah Hill (Parkersburg, W.Va.) served up three aces. The Mariners had 15 aces over the three sets.
 
Defensively, senior Gabby Marionakis (Royal Palm Beach, Fla.), sophomore Nicole Ibinson (Fredericksburg, Va.) and freshman Alaina Hudson (King George, Va.) all picked up five digs apiece.
 
Merchant Marine held Staten Island to a -.189 hitting percentage in the match, as the Dolphins had just nine kills on 74 attempts with 23 errors.
 
Senior Siobhan Granich and junior Vanessa Reyes both led CSI with four kills apiece, while junior Jessica Cafiero had nine assists and senior Victoria Wong led all players in the match with 11 digs.
 
The Mariners will take part in a Skyline tri-match hosted by Sarah Lawrence this coming Saturday, Oct. 22. They will take on the host Gryphons at 11 a.m. before squaring off against the Mount St. Vincent Dolphins at 1 p.m. Live stats and a live video feed of both matches will be available with links on the USMMA Women's Volleyball Schedule Page.
