Withers Earns All-America Honors With An Upset To Highlight Session Two

3/14/2025 9:41:00 PM

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (March 14, 2025) – U.S. Merchant Marine Academy sophomore Tyler Withers (Gettysburg, Pa.) is an All-American! Withers upset the #2 seed in the 184-pound bracket in his first (and only) bout of the second session on Friday at the NCAA National Championship Meet.

Senior Reid Garrison (Broadway, Va.) was defeated twice in the session and saw his time at nationals, and his illustrious career, come to an end.

Meet Links Withers took on second-seeded Kasey Ross of Wartburg in the quarterfinals of 184.

The bout was scoreless going into the third period with Ross owning two minutes of riding time due to riding Withers the entire second period.

Ross had the choice for the start of the third and chose to stay up. He nearly turned Withers onto his back, but Withers rolled past and wound up with a reversal of Ross for two points with just 1:05 remaining.

The match was far from over, though, as Withers could not allow Ross to escape due to the imminent riding time point if time ran out that would have tied the score. The Kings Point sophomore was able to stay on top of the Wartburg junior for the remainder of the time to earn the 2-1 decision upset and his place in the semifinals on Saturday morning.

At 285, Garrison also faced the #2 seed in the quarterfinals, Rayshawn Dixon of Ferrum. Dixon came out on top by way of a third-period technical fall which dropped Garrison to the "wrestlebacks" bracket.

That set up a showdown with the bracket's #6-seed, Alvernia's Mauro Pellot, in a rematch of the Region III championship bout from two weeks ago. Pellot once again came out on top, this time with a first-period pin, ending Garrison's season.

Withers is back in action in the third session Saturday morning beginning at 10 a.m. at the Amica Mutual Pavilion. He will face #3-seed Brandt Bombard of Augsburg in the semifinals, bout number 316. With a win he will wrestle for a national championship, while a loss will drop him to the third-place bout.
