Mariners Win Nearly Every Race At Villanova SprintFest

2/3/2024 9:26:00 PM

VILLANOVA, Pa. (Feb. 3, 2024) – It was an unusual, but fun meet for the USMMA men's swimming team on Saturday at Division I Villanova University, as the Mariners took part in the 2024 Nova SprintFest. No team scores were kept in a program that featured 50-yard and 100-yard races for every stroke as well 100-yard relays. (Yes, you read that right, they jumped in from both sides of the pool today!) The Mariners competed in most events unopposed, except for two races which featured DI swimmers from Villanova.

Meet Link Sophomore Teague Mayer (Boulder, Colo.), junior Dylan White (Burke, Va.), senior Daniel Scherrer (Wellesley, Mass.) and freshman Barrie Snyder (Jacksonville, Fla.) started the day by touching first in the 100 medley relay with a time of 44.14.

Senior Ethan Williams (Jacksonville, Fla.) followed with a victory in the 100 freestyle in 48.65, before Mayer won the 50 backstroke in 23.68 and the 50 breaststroke was won by freshman Luke Dankert (Grand Island, Neb.), who touched first in 27.33.

The most usual results of the day followed, as junior Joseph DeCarlo (Powder Springs, Ga.) had a victorious time of 52.32 in the 100 butterfly, Scherrer won the 50 free in 21.43 and Mayer touched first in the 100 backstroke in 50.56.

Dankert was triumphant once again in the 100 breast in 59.90, and fellow plebe Snyder won the 50 fly in 23.45.

Showing off all four strokes (very quickly) in the 100 individual medley was Mayer, who won his fourth event of the day in 52.59, all before the enjoyable day ended with a 100 free relay, and the team of senior Heath Lewis (Chesapeake, Va.), sophomore Matthew Wachendorfer (Greensboro, N.C.), Snyder and senior James Todd (Columbia, S.C.) was victorious in 40.44.

Mayer was named the "Mariner of the Meet," awarded based on a team vote to an individual for their performance and contribution to the team.

Up next is the first-ever New Jersey Athletic Conference Swimming & Diving Championship Meet, which will take place Feb. 15-19 down at the University of Maryland in College Park, Md. Tickets for the four-day event are already on sale and can be purchased at this link. Any other live links or important information that becomes available for the NJAC Championships will be posted on the USMMA Men's Swimming & Diving Schedule Page before it begins.
