Men’s Swim & Dive Defeats Mount St. Mary At Home

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Jan. 17, 2024) – On Wednesday night, the USMMA men's swimming & diving team won all 13 events en route to a 128-33 home victory over Skyline Conference opponent Mount St. Mary during the Mariners' annual 142 meet at the Sue Petersen Lubow Pool. The win improved Merchant Marine's record to 6-0 (4-0 Skyline), while the Knights fell to 4-9 (2-2 Skyline) in defeat.
 
Meet Links Three different Mariners earned two victories each, as senior diver Jonathan Wargo (West Branch, Iowa) took the top spot in both diving competitions with scores of 165.15 on the one-meter board and 181.48 in the three-meter competition.
 
In swimming action, sophomore Matthew Wachendorfer (Greensboro, N.C.) was victorious in the 100 backstroke in 55.47 and as the first leg of the 200 freestyle relay team that won in 1:30.55, while classmate Teague Mayer (Boulder, Colo.) touched first in the 50 free butterfly in a lifetime-best time of 22.29 and anchored the 200 medley relay team that led off the meet with a win in 1:41.92.
 
Also on the 200 free relay team with Wachendorfer were senior James Todd (Columbia, S.C.), junior Dylan White (Burke, Va.) and senior Ethan Williams (Huntingtown, Md.). In the 200 medley relay team, Mayer's three teammates ahead of him were junior Christiaan Lee (Palisades Park, N.J.), freshman Ryan Lester (Heath, Texas) and senior Heath Lewis (Chesapeake, Va.).
 
Other individual victories are listed below. 
  • Junior Cal Frame (Mt. Pleasant, S.C.) in the 1650 free in a lifetime-best time of 17:15.70
  • Junior Joseph DeCarlo (Powder Springs, Ga.) in the 200 free in 1:50.19
  • Senior Daniel Scherrer (Wellesley, Mass.) in the 200 individual medley in 2:01.35
  • Junior Evan Davis (Bethany Beach, Del.) in the 100 butterfly in 54.85
  • Senior Oliver Austin (Essex, Vt.) in the 100 free in 49.31
  • Sophomore Ryan Chmielenski (Bristow, Va.) in the 500 free in 5:00.58
  • and freshman Daniel Gibbs (Stafford, Va.) in the 100 breaststroke in 1:02.80 
Additionally, Lewis earned a lifetime-best time of 1:06.09 in the 100 breaststroke.
 
Davis was named the "Mariner of the Meet," awarded based on a team vote to an individual for their performance and contribution to the team. Wargo earned the honor for the divers. 
 
Up next, the Mariners will travel to Hoboken, N.J., this Saturday, Jan. 20, for a non-conference dual meet against Stevens Institute of Technology. Action is set to get underway at 1 p.m. A live video link to watch the meet is available on the USMMA Men's Swimming & Diving Schedule Page.
