Cable Headed To NCAA Diving Regionals, Griffith's Cut & Scherrer's First-Place Finish Also Highlights Mariners’ Second-Place Finish At TCNJ Invite

EWING, N.J. (Dec. 3, 2023) – The USMMA men's swimming & diving team came in second place out of five teams at the competitive, three-day TCNJ Invitational this weekend. The Mariners amassed 816.5 team points. The host Lions won the meet with 1,442 team points and Stevens Institute placed third with 770 points.
 
Sophomore Thomas Cable (Litchfield Park, Ariz.) officially punched his tickets to the NCAA Diving Regionals later this season after attaining his NCAA qualifying score of the season when he placed second in the one-meter event on Sunday with a score of 452.60. Additionally, junior Brendan Griffiths (Easton, Pa.) came in second place in the three-meter dive event on Saturday with an NCAA cut score of 446.40, his first qualifying mark on that board this seaon.
 
Senior Daniel Scherrer (Wellesley, Mass.) had the Mariners' lone first-place finish of the weekend, as he won the 50 freestyle on Saturday in 21.26. That time a season best by three-tenths of a second.
 
Meet Link Other notable finishes, including season-best times, are listed below. 
  • The 200 free relay team of freshman Barrie Snyder (Jacksonville, Fla.), Scherrer, freshman Douglas Bui (Ridgecrest, Calif.) and sophomore Matthew Wachendorfer (Greensboro, N.C.) came in fourth place in 1:26.22
  • Freshman Ryan Lester (Heath, Texas) dropped nine seconds in the 500 free with a time of 4:45.62
  • Sophomore Teague Mayer (Boulder, Colo.) came in third place in the 200 IM 1:54.00 and had previously set a season-best time of 1:53.40 in prelims earlier on Friday
  • The 400 medley relay team of Snyder, Scherrer, Wachendorfer and Lester came in third place (3:09.41)
  • Mayer recorded a lifetime best in the 100 backstroke with a time of 50.80 leading off 400MR
  • Sophomore Diego Corredor (Fort Myers, Fla.) also had a lifetime in the 50 free with a time of 22.85 leading off the 200FR
  • The 200 medley relay team Mayer, freshman Luke Dankert (Grand Island, Neb.), Scherrer and Snyder came in fourth place with a season-best by one second (1:33.47)
  • Lester came in fourth place in the 400 IM with a season-best time by 10 seconds (4:12.28)
  • Sophomore Ryan Chmielenski (Bristow, Va.) came in eighth place in the 400 IM (4:34.41)
  • Wachendorfer came in third place in the 200 free with a season-best time by four seconds (1:44.55)
  • Lester came in fourth in the 200 free with a season-best time by three seconds (1:44.85)
  • Mayer came in second place in the 100 backstroke in 50.86
  • The 800 free relay team of freshman Abraham Shim (Rockwall, Texas), Lester, Wachendorfer and junior Cal Frame (Mt. Pleasant, S.C.) came in third place in 7:14.67
  • Mayer came in third place in the 200 back with a season-best time by two seconds (1:52.61)
  • Scherrer placed second in the 100 free with a season-best time by one second (47.10)
  • Lester came in fourth place in the 1650 (mile) free in 16:31.13
  • Freshman Peyton Harbin (Rockwall, Texas) came in sixth place in the 200 butterfly with a season-best time by three seconds (1:59.05)
  • And the 400 free relay team of Snyder, Scherrer, Wachendorfer and Lester placed second with season-best by six seconds (3:09.41) 
The Mariners' home meet this coming Wednesday against Skyline opponent Purchase College has been postponed. A make-up date will be announced in the coming days. Up next, USMMA will host a Skyline tri-meet on Saturday, Dec. 9, where the Mariners will welcome in Sarah Lawrence and SUNY Maritime. Action will get underway at 1 p.m. at the Sue Petersen Lubow Pool.
