Cable Gets First NCAA Cut Of Season In One-Meter Dive, Mariners Win Six Events At USMMA Memorial Invite

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Nov. 18, 2023) – On Saturday in the newly-minted Sue Petersen Lubow Pool, the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy men's swimming & diving team opened the 2023-24 season with the annual USMMA Memorial Invitational. The Mariners had a number of highlights in the unscored event, including an NCAA cut achieved and six first-place finishes.
 
Meet Links Sophomore diver Thomas Cable (Litchfield Park, Ariz.) achieved his first NCAA cut of the season in the one-meter dive with a score of 289.50. He came in second place in the event, while also placing third in the three-meter (284.75).
 
The Mariners had the following first-place finishes on the day: 
  • 200 Medley Relay Team of senior Teague Mayer (Boulder, Colo.), junior Dylan White (Burke, Va.), junior Joseph DeCarlo (Powder Springs, Ga.) and senior Daniel Scherrer (Wellesley, Mass.) in 1:34.19
  • Freshman Barrie Snyder (Jacksonville, Fla.) in the 100 free in 48.42 (first collegiate win)
  • Scherrer in the 50 free in 21.47
  • Mayer in the 200 backstroke in 1:54.25
  • DeCarlo in the 100 butterfly in 51.78
  • Freshman Luke Dankert (Grand Island, Neb.) in the 200 breaststroke in 2:11.22 (first collegiate win) 
Other notable finishes throughout the meet are listed below. 
  • Snyder in the 50 free in 21.71 (second place)
  • Junior Andrew Turbyfill (Fredericksburg, Va.) in the 400 IM in 4:23.73 (second place)
  • The 400 free relay team of Scherrer, sophomore Matthew Wachendorfer (Greensboro, N.C.), Lester and Snyder in 3:15.79 (second place)
  • Mayer in the 100 backstroke in 52.14 (third place)
  • Freshman Ryan Lester (Heath, Texas) in the 500 free in 4:54.77 (third place)
  • Mayer in the 200 individual medley in 1:56.86 (third place)
  • DeCarlo in the 200 butterfly in 1:57.42 (third place)
  • Lester in the 400 IM in 4:28.98 (third place) 
Mayer was named the "Mariner of the Meet," awarded based on a team vote to an individual for their performance and contribution to the team. That honor also went to freshman Charlie Williams (Vienna, Va.) representing the divers.
 
The Mariners are back in action the weekend of Dec. 1-3, when they travel to Ewing, N.J., to take part in the TCNJ Invitational. Any live links for the three-day meet will be posted on the USMMA Men's Swimming & Diving Schedule Page before the event begins.
