KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Oct. 21, 2015) – On Wednesday night, the USMMA men's soccer team hosted Drew University in an important late-season Landmark Conference showdown at Brooks Stadium. The Mariners lost to the Rangers by the final score of 3-1, and fall to 9-6-1 (3-3-1 Landmark) on the season, while Drew improves to 11-3-2 (3-2-1 Landmark) with the win.

Before the game, the Mariners paid tribute to their four graduating seniors with a special Senior Night Ceremony at midfield. The Merchant Marine coaches were joined by USMMA Superintendent RADM James Helis and Interim Commandant of Midshipmen Capt. Bob DeStafney to honor Dan Weldon (Holland Township, N.J.), Chris Scott (Eagle River, Alaska), Ryan Gardner (Staten Island, N.Y.) and Erik Kempinski (Milford, N.J.).

On the pitch, Merchant Marine scored just over six minutes into the game, when junior Gavin Yingling (Salisbury, Md.) tallied his team-leading 12th goal of the season off an assist by Weldon. Drew responded 20 minutes later on a goal by junior Ian Pavlak. The game was tied 1-1 into the halftime break.

In the first half, junior Cory Maier (Hampton, Va.) made four saves, while his counterpart for the Rangers, junior John Marques, had two stops.

Drew found the back of the net twice within five minutes with tallies in the 61st and 66th minutes, both by junior Bass Etta-Ashu, to take a two-goal lead with over 25 minutes left to play. The Mariners were unable to fight back down the stretch, despite outshooting the Rangers 6-2.

Maier ended the night with seven saves, while Marques registered three saves.

The Mariners will end the regular season this coming Saturday, Oct. 24, with a road game at Scranton which begins at 1 p.m. at the Royals' Fitzpatrick Field. Live stats and a live video feed of the game are available by following those links.
