The Mariners had a chance early to open the scoring, but sophomore
Robert Derwin's (East Meadow, N.Y.) header hit the post, keeping the match scoreless. The Blue and Gray were able to get on the board in the 16th minute when senior midfielder
Drew Boukidis (Charlotte, N.C.) balloned a beautiful lead pass to Mallas, who raced inside the 18 and put it into the back of the net to make it 1-0. Boukidis almost gave USMMA a two-goal lead but found the team's second post of the first half in the 24th minute, as Merchant Marine would hold a 1-0 lead going into the halfway point.
