KINGS POINT, N.Y. (April 18, 2025) – The USMMA men's tennis team defeated visiting non-conference foe Hunter College, 7-0, quickly on Friday at the Brooks Stadium Courts in a make-up of a previously postponed match. The Mariners' third-straight victory improved their record to 5-3, while a two-match win-streak for the Hawks came to an end, as they fell to 3-5.

Only one of the nine matches featured a game score by Hunter reaching three, as Merchant Marine wrapped up the match in just an hour and 30 minutes.

In doubles, the freshman duo of
Fredrich Buquel (Mission, Texas) and
Aaron Zhao (Temple City, Calif.) was the first flight to finish at #3 with a 6-0 victory. The #2 pairing of sophomores
Brent Mathews (Falls Church, Va.) and
Josh Staroselskiy (Brooklyn, N.Y.) clinched the doubles point with another 6-0 triumph. Closing out the action in doubles was the senior team of
Connor McQuade (Jacksonville, Fla.) and
RJ Novak (Yorktown, Va.), who won the top flight, 6-2.

Novak was the first Mariner to finish his match in singles action, claiming a 6-1, 6-0 win at #2. That was followed by sophomore
Patrick Novotny (Fort Worth, Texas) coming out on top at #4 by the score of 6-1, 6-1. The match-clincher came when McQuade triumphed at #6, 6-0, 6-1.

Buquel at #3 (6-1, 6-2), followed by Staroselskiy at #6 (6-1, 6-1) and then Mathews at #1 (6-3, 6-3) closed out the action on the afternoon.

The Mariners are back in action this coming Monday, April 21, when they travel to Brooklyn College to face the Bulldogs in a non-conference match beginning at 4 p.m.
