Chiappetti Registers Five-RBI Game To Lead Mariners Past Baruch, 9-2

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (April 1, 2025) – Sophomore Tommy Chiappetti (Buckeye, Ariz.) totaled five RBIs as the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy baseball team scored six runs in just the first two innings and defeated Baruch, 9-2. The Mariners improved to 10-8, while the Bearcats dropped to 3-15.

Game Links Chiappetti finished 3-for-5 with two doubles, while senior Jack Millen (Shelby, N.C.) went 3-for-4 with an RBI, two stolen bases and three runs scored. Sophomore Ricardo Olivares (Flower Mound, Texas) was 3-for-4 with a double, a triple and an RBI, and classmate Landon Troutt (Fairfield, Calif.) went 2-for-3 with a triple, two steals and three runs scored.

Baruch quickly took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, but USMMA responded and took the lead for good with three runs in the bottom of the frame. Millen drew a leadoff walk and Troutt followed with a single before Chiappetti put the Mariners on top with a two-run double. Chiappetti later stole third, but scored on an errant throw to make it a 3-1 ballgame.

The Mariners tacked on three more runs in the second. After freshman Louis Inserra (Coplay, Pa.) led off with a single, junior Charles Cahalan (Overland Park, Kan.) reached on an error and Millen followed with an RBI single. Troutt was then plunked before Chiappetti put USMMA up, 6-1, with another two-run double.

USMMA benefitted from an error to add a run in the fourth for a 7-1 lead. Millen singled to lead off the frame and advanced to second on a walk to Troutt. Millen then stole third and scored on an errant throw.

The Mariners added another run in the fifth as freshman Luke Kruer (Sellersburg, Ind.) led off with a double before an Olivares RBI double pushed the lead to 8-1.

After Baruch used a two-out rally to plate a run in the sixth, a leadoff triple by Troutt set the table for a run in the bottom of the inning as Chiappetti gave the Mariners a 9-2 lead with an RBI single.

Senior Michael Monkevich (Gaithersburg, Md.) allowed one run in 5.0 innings to earn the win.

The Mariners return to action on Saturday, April 5, with a 4:30 p.m. doubleheader against St. Joseph's-Brooklyn. Please note that these games have been moved to USMMA.
