KINGS POINT, N.Y. (April 4, 2025) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy baseball team had a seven-run fifth inning in each game of a doubleheader sweep against St. Joseph's-Brooklyn. After a seven-run fifth helped secure a 10-5 game one win, another seven-run fifth led to an 11-4 victory in game two. USMMA improved to 12-8 (4-0 Skyline), while St. Joseph's-Brooklyn fell to 2-9 (0-4 Skyline).

Game 1
USMMA trailed, 5-2, after four innings before taking control with a seven-run fifth en route to a 10-5 victory in the opener. Freshman
Luke Kruer (Sellersburg, Ind.) finished 3-for-4 with two home runs, three RBIs and three runs scored, while classmate
Braden Vazquez (Missouri City, Texas) went 2-for-2 with a double, a triple, three RBIs and two runs. Junior
Ryan Felton (Granbury, Texas) earned the win, striking out six and surrendering two runs in 4.0 innings of relief.
After falling behind 2-0 in the first, USMMA made it 2-1 in the second after Kruer launched a solo homer to left center.
USMMA tied the game at 2-2 in the third after Vazquez led off with a triple and senior
Jack Millen (Shelby, N.C.) followed with a sacrifice fly.
St. Joseph's-Brooklyn retook the lead with an RBI groundout in the bottom of the third and extended the lead to 5-2 with back-to-back RBI singles with one out in the fourth.
The Mariners then sent 12 men to the plate as part of a seven-run fifth. Vazquez and Millen both walked before sophomore
Landon Troutt (Fairfield, Calif.) singled to load the bases with no outs. A wild pitch brought home a run and sophomore
Tommy Chiappetti (Buckeye, Ariz.) followed with an RBI fielder's choice. Sophomore
Christian Gamez (Kent Island, Md.) kept the inning alive with a two-out RBI single that tied the game at 5-5 and Kruer then connected for a two-run, inside-the-park home run. Vazquez capped the inning with a two-run double for a 9-5 lead.
A Vazquez sacrifice fly in the seventh made it a 10-5 ballgame.
Game 2
USMMA overcame a 4-3 deficit after four innings with a seven-run fifth inning and completed the sweep with an 11-4 triumph. Kruer finished 2-for-5 with three RBIs, while Millen went 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBIs. Vazquez was 1-for-2 with two RBIs, three walks and two runs, and Chiappetti was 2-for-2 with an RBI, three walks and two runs. Freshman
Travis Campbell (Coleman, Texas) had three strikeouts in 2.0 scoreless innings of relief for the win.
After USMMA took a quick 1-0 lead in the first on a Chiappetti RBI double, the Bears answered in the bottom of the frame and made it a 3-1 ballgame with a three-run home run.
The Mariners benefitted from an error to add a run in the third. After loading the bases with one out, freshman
Louis Inserra (Coplay, Pa.) reached on a two-out error that allowed a run to score and brought USMMA to within 3-2.
St. Joseph's-Brooklyn got the run back on an RBI fielder's choice in the bottom of the third, but the Mariners pulled back to within 4-3 in the fourth as Millen led off the frame with a solo home run to left center.

Garrett Clapsaddle (Murphy, N.C.) walked to reload the bases and Kruer cleared them with a single plus an error that made it a 10-4 ballgame.
The Mariners tacked on one more run in the sixth after Vazquez set the table with a one-out walk. Vazquez advanced to second on a wild pitch and stole third before Troutt gave USMMA an 11-4 lead with an RBI single.
