KINGS POINT, N.Y. (March 30, 2025) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy baseball team outscored Yeshiva by a combined 33-2 margin to open Skyline play with a doubleheader sweep on Senior Day. The Mariners took the opener by a 16-1 margin before registering a 17-1 victory in game two. USMMA improved to 9-8 (2-0 Skyline), while Yeshiva fell to 0-15 (0-10 Skyline).

Game 1
Three players registered three-hit games as the Mariners used a seven-run fifth to roll past Yeshiva, 16-1, in the opener. Sophomore
Ricardo Olivares (Flower Mound, Texas) finished 3-for-4 with a home run, four RBI and three runs scored, while senior
Jack Millen (Shelby, N.C.) was 3-for-4 with two RBI and sophomore
Tommy Chiappetti (Buckeye, Ariz.) went 3-for-3 with two runs. Senior
Garrett Clapsaddle (Murphy, N.C.) finished 2-for-5 with three RBI and freshman
Louis Inserra (Coplay, Pa.) went 1-for-1 with two RBI, two walks and three runs scored.

A hit batsman, a walk and three stolen bases set up a Clapsaddle RBI groundout as the Mariners took a 1-0 lead in the first.

USMMA tacked on three more runs in the second. After an Inserra RBI single, Olivares gave USMMA a 4-0 lead with a two-run, inside-the-park home run.

The Mariners put up another three-spot in the third inning after Chiappetti and Clapsaddle opened the inning with consecutive singles. Sophomore
Christian Gamez (Kent Island, Md.) followed with a sacrifice fly before freshman
Luke Kruer (Sellersburg, Ind.) plated a run with an RBI single. Inserra then put the Mariners up, 7-0, with another sacrifice fly.

USMMA sent 11 men to the plate as part of a seven-run fifth frame. Kruer started things with a one-out single before senior
Danny Heck (Massillon, Ohio) and Inserra worked back-to-back walks to load the bases. Olivares and Millen followed with back-to-back, two-run singles before the Mariners loaded the bases again. After Clapsaddle added a two-run double, a Gamez sacrifice fly made it a 14-0 ballgame.

Yeshiva broke into the scoring column with an RBI groundout in the sixth, but the Mariners answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning for a 16-1 lead. Inserra walked with one out and Olivares singled before Millen added a single, but an error on the play allowed two runs to score.

Game 2
The Mariners collected seven extra-base hits, including two home runs, and used a six-run third to complete the sweep with a 17-1 victory. Millen went 2-for-5 with a home run, two RBI and two runs, while Clapsaddle also homered and finished 2-for-3 with three RBI and two runs. Gamez went 3-for-3 with three RBI and Chiappetti was 2-for-2 with two RBI and three runs.

Freshman
Cody White (San Diego, Calif.) worked a 1-2-3 first before the Mariners scored twice in the bottom of the inning. Back-to-back one-out doubles by Troutt and Chiappetti gave USMMA the lead after just three batters, and Gamez later made it 2-0 with a two-out RBI single.

White struck out the side as part of a 1-2-3 second before USMMA strung together six-consecutive one-out hits as part of a six-run third. Troutt tripled with one out before Chiappetti promptly followed with an RBI single. After Clapsaddle singled, Gamez plated a run with an RBI double and Kruer added a two-run single. Heck made it six-straight hits with an RBI single and junior
Charles Cahalan (Overland Park, Kan.) capped the inning with a two-out, RBI single that made it an 8-0 game.

The Mariners went up 11-0 after a three-run fourth that included just one hit, but also had five stolen bases, four walks and two hit batsmen. The lone hit of the inning was a one-out RBI single by Gamez.

 USMMA then tacked on four more runs in the bottom of the fifth. After Millen led off with a double and sophomore
Frank Ruepp (Valdosta, Ga.) reached on a one-out error, Clapsaddle followed with a three-run, inside-the-park home run. Heck later gave the Mariners a 15-0 lead with a sacrifice fly.

Yeshiva scored a run in the sixth on an RBI groundout after registering its first and only hit of the ballgame with one out in the frame.

USMMA made it 17-1 in the bottom of the sixth after a leadoff walk set up a two-run, inside-the-park home run by Millen.

Kruer closed out the game by striking out the side in a 1-2-3 seventh.
