Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Second Half Surge Falls Short As Mariners Drop Road Game At Coast Guard, 14-9

NEW LONDON, Conn. (March 25, 2025) – The USMMA men's lacrosse team dropped its rivalry game against Coast Guard, 14-9, on Tuesday night up at the Bears' Cadet Memorial Field. In defeat, the Mariners' record falls to 3-4, while CGA improves to 6-2 with the win.

Game Link Junior Owen Barcus (Annapolis, Md.) led the way offensively for the Mariners with five points as he scored four goals and dished out one assist. Sophomore Owen Behr (Vestavia Hills, Ala.) registered four assists, while senior Jack Collins (Memphis, Tenn.) and junior William Badeer (Pittsburgh, Pa.) both recorded three points apiece, Collins with a goal and two helpers and Badeer with three goals.

Defensively, sophomore Ryan Thorne (Selden, N.Y.) caused a game-high three turnovers and also gobbled up three ground balls. Freshman William Schipfer (Colorado Springs, Colo.) had two CTs and three GBs, while also winning a team-best seven face-offs, and sophomore goalie Julian Garcia (Lakeway, Texas) made nine saves over the 60 minutes.

The Bears struck first on the evening just 95 seconds into the game, but the Mariners answered back exactly five minutes later to tie the score at 1-1. Coast Guard scored the last three goals of the opening quarter and the first three of the second to build up a 7-1 lead with under six minutes to go until halftime. Barcus ended the scoring in the half with his second tally of the night with just 22 seconds left to lessen Merchant Marine's deficit to 7-2 at the half.

After CGA scored twice in the first four minutes of the second half, USMMA rattled off five of the next six goals to make it a 10-7 game late in the third. That was the closest the Mariners would get, however, as the Bears tallied the next three before Barcus made it interesting again by scoring goals three and four on the night for him, but Coast Guard closed out the scoring with 95 seconds left.

The Bears were a nearly perfect 17-for-18 on clears for the night, while keeping the Mariners to 17-of-25 attempts to get the ball up the field. The hosts also held a 19-8 advantage in face-offs and a 26-19 advantage in ground balls.

For Coast Guard, freshman Ezekiel Christian led all players on the night with six points (4G, 2A), while two players recorded three-point efforts – senior Ryan Hunter (2G, 1A) and sophomore Max Silver (1G, 2A) – and another two had two points apiece – sophomore Eric Key (2G) and classmate Jamison Wildt (1G, 1A). Sophomore Mason Tucker won 13-of-19 face-offs and picked up a game-high eight groundballs, while Key recorded a team-best two caused turnovers. In net, junior Dustin Miller earned the victory after making 11 saves.

The Mariners are back in action this coming Saturday, March 29, when they open Skyline Conference action against the Knights of Mount St. Mary College. Opening face-off is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Brooks Stadium.
