Russo Registers 100th Career Point In Mariners’ 16-11 Home Loss To Marywood

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (March 22, 2025) – The USMMA women's lacrosse team lost its home tilt to visiting Marywood University, 16-11, on Saturday at Brooks Stadium. The setback drops the Mariners' record to 2-2, while the Pacers improve to 6-4 with the victory.

Game Link Coming into the game, senior Gianna Russo (Wake Forest, N.C.) needed just five points for 100 on her career and she reached the milestone early in the second quarter when she scored a goal on a rebound. She finished with a team-best seven points on five goals and two assists.

Classmate Lauren Jablonowski (Levittown, N.Y.) and sophomore Leslie Wysong (Mount Pleasant, S.C.) also registered multi-point games, as Jablonowski scored two goals and dished out three assists and Wysong had a hat-trick with one assist. Also getting on the scoresheet were freshman Reese Ripley (Denver, Colo.) with a goal, and fellow plebe Lana Hayes (Toms River, N.J.) with an assist.

Sophomore Grace Picozzi (Collegeville, Pa.) led all players with six ground balls while also picking up a team-high five draw controls. Ripley, junior Nicole Nagengast (Seaford, N.Y.) and freshman Juliet Trouse (Riverdale, N.J.) each had a team-best three caused turnovers. In net, junior Karianna Eagle (Little Egg Harbor Township, N.J.) made five saves and she, Jablonowski, Trouse and Hayes all gobbled up four GBs apiece.

The two teams combined for 63 turnovers on the afternoon. The Mariners struggled on their clear game throughout, as they were only successful on 15-of-30 opportunities. The Pacers held a 20-11 advantage in draw controls and converted 5-of-8 free-positions attempts. Merchant Marine far out-rebounded Marywood, 36-19, while all other stats were relatively close.

It was a very back-and-forth game early, with the lead changing three times in the first quarter alone. Neither team held an advantage of more than two goals until Marywood tallied four straight from the midway point of the third quarter into the early stages of the fourth to take a 13-10 lead.

The Mariners pulled back within two when Russo collected her fifth goal of the day at 11:52 of the fourth. The hosts had their chances to get closer, but Marywood pulled away with three tallies late in the quarter.

For the Pacers, junior Kaitlyn Smith led all players on the afternoon with nine points and four caused turnovers. She scored four times and dished out five assists. Five other players recorded multi-point games, including junior Natalie Yilanjian with five goals and classmate Avery Meighan with two tallies and two helpers. Yilanjian also secured a game-high eight draw controls, while Smith led Marywood with five ground balls. Freshman goalie Jenny Keagy earned the victory after coming in to start the second quarter and making 11 saves over the 45 minutes of action.

The Mariners are back in action on Wednesday night, March 26, when they play host to Gwynedd Mercy in the final non-conference games of the season. Opening draw control is set for 7 p.m. at Brooks Stadium.
