Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men’s Soccer Closes Out Homecoming Festivities With 4-1 Victory Over Kean

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Sept. 8, 2024) – The USMMA men's soccer team's second half offense on Saturday against Kean matched the electricity of the nearby concert put on by Gary Sinise & The Lt. Dan Band at KP, as the Mariners scored three goals in the final stanza to down the Cougars, 4-1. The victory improved the Mariners to 3-1 on the season, while Kean fell to 2-2.

Game Links For the second-straight game, sophomore Patrick Novotny (Fort Worth, Texas) scored Merchant Marine's first two goals. Freshman Robert Derwin (East Meadow, N.Y.) added the first of his career as an insurance marker with 16 minutes left to play and sophomore Michael Doshan (Mound, Minn.) tallied his second of the season in the 89th minute to close out the scoring.

Within five minutes of the game starting, the skies opened up and the Mariners and Cougars were forced to play in monsoon-like conditions. Both teams would score while it was raining cats and dogs, with Kean getting on the board first in the sixth minute.

Novotny answered just over 11 minutes later when he blasted a shot into the net after a failed clear attempt in the box off of a throw-in by senior Derek Vanasse (Camarillo, Calif.).

Neither team scored the rest of the half, but just 23 seconds into the second half, Novotny beat two defenders and fired a shot that went crossbar down into the net to give the Mariners a 2-1 advantage. That goal wound up being the game-winner, as Derwin and Doshan would later add to the lead. Vanasse picked up an assist on Doshan's tally.

Sophomore keeper Ethan Howell (Alexandria, Va.) picked up the win, making four saves over the 90 minutes. For the Cougars, Dominic Ridge also made four stops in the losing effort.

The Mariners are back in action on Friday night, Sept. 13, when they travel up to New London, Conn., to take on arch-rival Coast Guard beginning at 6 p.m.
