Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Mariners Fall To Rival Coast Guard, 3-1

NEW LONDON, Conn. (Sept. 13, 2024) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy men's soccer team dropped its road matchup up at arch-rival Coast Guard on Friday night, 3-1. The Mariners' record drops to 3-2 on the season, while the Bears improve to 5-0-1 with the victory.

Game Link Coast Guard got on the board first in the opening minute of the game and maintained that 1-0 lead throughout the first half. Shots were an even 3-3 in the first 45 minutes, with the Bears holding a 2-1 advantage in shots on goal.

CGA doubled its lead in the 58th minute and USMMA responded 10 minutes later to make it a one-goal game yet again when freshman Robert Derwin (East Meadow, N.Y.) found the back of the net off an assist by senior Derek Vanasse (Camarillo, Calif.).

Exactly nine minutes later, Coast Guard added an insurance tally that closed out the scoring on the night.

The Bears finished with a 14-13 advantage in shots, including 6-5 in shots on goal. Sophomore keeper James Castoro (Garden City, N.Y.) made two saves on the night, while his counterpart for CGA, junior John Putnam, had five saves to earn the win.

It's somewhat of a quick turnaround for the Mariners as they open Skyline Conference action this Sunday, Sept. 15, against the Panthers of Purchase College. Kick-off is scheduled for 12-noon at Brooks Stadium. (Note the location change up to Tomb Field/Brooks Stadium,)
