Five Different Goal Scorers Power Mariners Past Hunter

RANDALL'S ISLAND, N.Y. (Sept. 4, 2024) – A total of eight different players got on the scoresheet, as the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy men's soccer team rebounded from Tuesday night's loss to defeat Hunter College, 5-1, on the road Wednesday afternoon. The Mariners' record improves to 2-1, while the Hawks fall to 0-3.

Game Link USMMA wasted little time getting on the scoreboard, as sophomore Patrick Novotny (Fort Worth, Texas) found the back of the net off a pass from classmate Andrew Jung (Fairfax, Va.) in just third minute. Just over five minutes later, junior John Germain (Cornwall, N.Y.) doubled the Mariner lead on an unassisted goal that would stand as the game-winner.

Before the first half closed out, sophomore Michael Doshan (Mound, Minn.) made it 3-0 with his first collegiate marker, assisted by junior Tyson Mallas (Los Angeles, Calif.).

In the second stanza, goals by freshman Brayden Copeland (West End, N.C.) in the 70th minute, the first of his career, and fellow plebe Colin Robertson (Milford, Mich.) in the 89th minute sandwiched the only tally of the contest by Hunter by junior Ben Avakook. Sophomore Brady Dillon (Westminster, Md.) recorded his first career point with an assist on Robertson's goal.

Sophomore keeper James Castoro (Garden City, N.Y.) earned the victory between the pipes after making five saves. His counterparts for the Hawks, senior Matthew Heimowitz and freshman Max Tsigalnitsky, combined for six saves with Heimowitz recording five in the opening half and Tsigalnitsky finishing the game out with one stop.

Up next, the Mariners host Kean University on Homecoming Weekend this Saturday, Sept. 7, beginning at 3:30 p.m. down at Bartoszek Field.
