Drew came out hot in front of a rowdy Kings Point crowd, opening up with five-straight points before running their advantage out to 9-2 at one point. The two sides played fairly evenly from there, but Drew went on to win the first set 25-15. Freshman
Jenny Dyke (Grand Rapids, Mich.) picked up three kills in the first set, and senior
Elizabeth Kay (Charleston, W. Va.) had two of her own.
Â
The second set was much closer, with both sides effectively trading points to 7-7, but then Drew rattled off three-straight after that. KP was playing from behind for the majority of the set, as the Rangers went on an 11-6 run to make it 20-13 Drew. USMMA battled back to tie the set at 21 apiece thanks in large part to freshman
Sophia Murray (Conroe, Texas), who recorded three kills in a 8-1 run. However, Drew closed the set strong and won 25-22.
Â
In the third and final set, the two sides battled to 3-3 early before Drew powered ahead with a 10-3 run, to make it 13-6 Rangers. The Mariners struggled to find much offensive success in the final set, as Drew went on to win 25-11, and close out a straight-set victory.
Â
Dyke paced USMMA with seven kills, with Kay was behind her at five. Defensively, junior libero
Stephanie Schatzman (Virginia Beach, Va.) dug out 24 balls, and freshman
Sydney Douglas (Herndon, Va.) recorded 14 digs. Dyke had four blocks as well.
Â
For the Rangers, junior Teeya Desgoutte had 11 kills and classmate Emily Shirk had a double-double with 10 kills and 13 digs.
Â
The Mariners are back in action this Friday, Sept. 27, at home against Medgar Evers for a 7 p.m. showdown inside the Liebertz Gymnasium.
