KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Sept. 27, 2024) – The USMMA women's volleyball team bounced back from their earlier defeat this week, by beating Medgar Evers College three sets to none on Friday night at the Liebertz Gymnasium. The victory improves the Mariners' record to 7-4, while the Cougars fall to 1-9.

Medgar Evers actually recorded the first two points of the match, and hung with the Mariners through the first chunk of the opening set, with KP holding a 6-4 edge. From there though, USMMA turned up the intensity.
Tony Nocera's club rattled off a 12-1 run, with
Virginia Robert (Lynchburg, Va.) and
Sophia Murray (Conroe, Texas) each picking up three kills in that stretch. The Cougars used a 5-0 run late in the set to make it a bit closer, but USMMA won the first set 25-12.
Â
The Mariners began the second set with a 10-1 stretch to quickly take command, as
Elizabeth Kay (Charleston, W. Va.) notched a couple kills, and
Sydney Douglas (Herndon, Va.) had a kill as well. Merchant Marine maintained a 10-point cushion throughout the set, but closed things out with an 8-1 stretch to win set #2 25-7.
Â
The third set started out a bit more competitive with Medgar Evers hanging with the Mariners, trailing just 4-3 early on. But much like the previous set, USMMA put this one out of reach with an 11-3 run in the middle of the set, running their lead to 15-5. The Mariners went on to win the third set 25-9, to make it a straight-set victory over the Medgar Evers Cougars.
Â
Kay and Murray each had eight kills to lead all players in the match, but it was the service game that pushed USMMA over the top. The Mariners recorded 26 aces as a team, with
Maddie Mayer (Aurora, Colo.) leading the way at seven aces, and
Sierra Richardson (Valparaiso, Ind,) just behind her at six.
Â
For the Cougars, Brittonya Lloyd recorded their only kill of the match.
Â
Next up for USMMA is the annual 142 Match, when KP hosts Skyline rival SUNY Maritime on Tuesday, Oct. 1.
