Mariners Erase Early 2-0 Deficit To Tie Farmingdale State Tuesday Night

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. (Sept. 25, 2024) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy men's soccer team played Skyline Conference foe Farmingdale State to a 2-2 tie on Tuesday night on the road at Rams Field. The Mariners move to 4-3-2 (1-1-2 Skyline), while FSC goes to 5-2-3 (2-0-2 Skyline).

Game Link Farmingdale stormed out to a 2-0 lead in the first eight minutes thanks to back-to-back tallies by junior Tyree Baskin Jr. USMMA responded by firing off the next five shots in the game over a six-minute span to no avail.

After back-to-back attempts by Baskin Jr. in the 18th and 25th minutes, the Mariners went on the offensive yet again and cut their deficit in half when freshman Colin Robertson (Milford, Mich.) tallied his fourth marker of the season on a header off a double-assist by juniors Colin Mushorn (Massapequa, N.Y.) and Jack Ouellette (Alexandria, Va.) in the 31st minute.

The Rams finished the half with four of the next five shot attempts, but they did not make it through on goal. Shots were in favor of the home squad, 9-8, in the opening 45 minutes, though Merchant Marine led in shots on goal, 3-2.

In the 51st minute, the Mariners were awarded a penalty kick and junior Billy Castoro (Garden City, N.Y.) found the back of the net for the equalizer. It was his third goal of the season.

Farmingdale State applied a ton of pressure in the second half, outshooting the Mariners a total of 15-6 in the frame. However, sophomore keeper Ethan Howell (Alexandria, Va.) made six saves to keep the score tied. His counterpart for the Rams, sophomore Anthony Martinez, made two second-half saves as part of five total on the night.

Up next, the Mariners travel up to Westchester County to take on Sarah Lawrence College this Saturday, Sept. 28. Kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Fleming Field in Yonkers, N.Y.
