Men’s Soccer Ties St. Joe's-Brooklyn, 1-1

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Sept. 21, 2024) – The USMMA men's soccer team was just under six minutes away from what would have been a disappointing home loss to Skyline Conference foe St. Joseph's-Brooklyn, but an 85th-minute goal by sophomore Patrick Novotny (Fort Worth, Texas) tied the game up at 1-1 and that is how it ended Saturday afternoon at Tomb Field. The tie moves the Mariners' record to 4-3-1 (1-1-1 Skyline), while the Bears move to 1-3-2 (0-0-1 Skyline).

Game Link Neither team found the back of the net in the first half, as the Mariners held a 5-3 advantage in shots, including a 2-0 edge in shots on goal.

St. Joe's junior Pablo Mejia opened the scoring after in the 56th minute he stole the ball from a Merchant Marine defender, dribbled it up a little and blasted it from 25-yards out, perfectly placed high inside the right post past a sprawling Ethan Howell (Alexandria, Va.).

The Mariners responded by shooting six of the next seven shots of the game towards the Bears' keeper, Alex Castro. Finally, the equalizer came in the waning minutes when Novotny corralled a failed clear in the box and ripped a shot low to the left corner that found the back of the net. It was Novotny's team-leading seventh goal of the season.

Merchant Marine held a 13-5 overall advantage in shots on the day, while also leading in corner kicks, 8-3. Howell finished the day with one save, while Castro made two stops.

The Mariners hit the road for two-straight games beginning with a Skyline showdown with the Rams of Farmingdale State College on Tuesday night, Sept. 24, beginning at 6 p.m.
