PATCHOGUE, N.Y. (Sept. 18, 2024) – Despite tying the game at 2-2 in the 82nd minute on a penalty kick goal, the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy men's soccer team was stunned by an 89th-minute tally by St. Joseph's-Long Island to drop its road Skyline Conference contest to the Golden Eagles, 3-2. In defeat, the Mariners fall to 4-3 (1-1 Skyline), while the victory improves SJLI to 2-1-2 (1-0 Skyline).

St. Joseph's opened the scoring in the 11th minute and held that 1-0 lead into halftime. The Golden Eagles held an 8-6 advantage in shots after the first 45 minutes.
Senior
Gio Tallini (Westbury, N.Y.) tied the game at 1-1 in the 36th minute, but St. Joe's answered back in the 54th to go ahead once again.

Robert Derwin (East Meadow, N.Y.), who wound up heading a rebound just wide right of the net. That set up a penalty kick with just under nine minutes to play.
The PK was taken by junior
Billy Castoro (Garden City, N.Y.), whose successful attempted was his second goal of the season which pulled the game even.
Both teams were firing in the closing minutes, as they each had three shots apiece. It was the second goal of the night by freshman Jack Pulisic with just under two minutes left that stood as the game-winner.
The Mariners finished the game outshooting St. Joe's, 20-16, including an 8-7 edge in shots on goal. Sophomore
Ethan Howell (Alexandria, Va.) made four saves, while his counterpart for the Golden Eagles' Giuseppe Vitale had six stops.
Up next, Merchant Marine will host St. Joseph's-Brooklyn on Saturday, Sept. 21. Opening whistle is scheduled for 12-noon up at Tomb Field.
