Volleyball Loses A Close Match To Hunter

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Sept. 17, 2024) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy women's volleyball team dropped an exciting 3-1 home loss to Hunter College on Tuesday night in front of an exuberant group of plebes inside the Liebertz Gymnasium. The setback dropped the Mariners to 5-3 on the season, while the Hawks move to 6-3 with the win.

Match Link Junior libero Stephanie Schatzman (Virginia Beach, Va.) picked up a match-high 29 digs over the four sets, while also leading all players with three service aces. Freshman Kylie Creech (Osceola, Ind.) spread out 21 assists on the night and senior Virginia Robert (Lynchburg, Va.) had the most kills on the night for USMMA with nine.

Freshman Sydney Douglas (Herndon, Va.) and senior Elizabeth Kay (Charleston, W.Va.) both chipped in with six kills apiece, with Douglas also recording seven digs. Freshman Sophia Murray (Conroe, Texas) added five kills and 12 digs, and Robert along with freshmen Maddie Mayer (Centennial, Colo.) and Jenny Dyke (Grand Rapids, Mich.) all had a match-high three blocks apiece.

After dropping the first set, 25-15, the Mariners rebounded to win the second by a score of 25-19.

Hunter had the Mariners on the ropes at 24-18 in the third set, but Merchant Marine battled back to within just two points, 24-22, causing the Hawks to burn a late timeout. Out of the breather, though, Hunter would find the set-clincher on kill to go up 2-1.

The visitors then went on to take another close one in the fourth set, 25-21, to seal the victory.

Three players recorded double-doubles for Hunter, as junior Izabella Williams had a match-best 13 kills to go along with 18 digs, classmate Simone McIntyre added 11 kills and 18 digs and fellow junior Bethany Tomaneng led all players with 37 assists, while also picking up 15 digs. Senior libero Erin Dugan led the Hawks with 22 digs.

Up next, the Mariners host another CUNYAC school, John Jay College, this Saturday, Sept. 21. First serve is scheduled for 10 a.m. at the Liebertz Gymnasium.
