Men’s Soccer Opens Skyline Play With Home Win Over Purchase

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Sept. 15, 2024) – The USMMA men's soccer team won its Skyline Conference-opener over Purchase College, 11-0, on Sunday afternoon at Tomb Field. The Mariners move to 4-2 (1-0 Skyline) in triumph, while the Panthers fall to 1-3 (0-2 Skyline) in defeat.

Game Link Merchant Marine wasted little time finding the back of the net as junior Billy Castoro (Garden City, N.Y.) headed in a corner kick by classmate John Germain (Cornwall, N.Y.) in the sixth minute. Sophomore Patrick Novotny (Fort Worth, Texas) doubled the Mariner lead in the 20th minute after rifling the ball into the twine off a cross by classmate Andrew Jung (Fairfax, Va.).

Freshman Robert Derwin (East Meadow, N.Y.) closed out the scoring in the first half when he received a pass from the baseline by sophomore Michael Doshan (Mound, Minn.) and fired it home.

USMMA outshot Purchase, 15-5, in the opening half, including an 11-4 advantage in shots on goal.

The Mariners completely took over in the second half, as the defense did not allow any chances to the Panthers and the offense netted a total of eight goals including two by Germain and a natural hat-trick by sophomore Quentin Lueck (Bakersfield, Calif.) in the final 25 minutes. Novotny, Doshan and senior Derek Vanasse (Camarillo, Calif.) also scored in the second half.

Picking up assists in the final 45 minutes were freshmen Blake Landreneau (LaFayette, La.) and Andrew Campbell (Severna Park, Md.) and seniors Fensom Hensley (Cumberland, R.I.) and Jason Healey (King George, Va.).

Sophomore keeper Ethan Howell (Alexandria, Va.) made four saves in the first half and earned the victory. He was replaced by classmate Evan Hoang-Le (Newburgh, N.Y.) for the final 19-plus minutes.

The Mariners are back in action on Wednesday night, Sept. 18, when they travel out to Patchogue in Suffolk County to take on St. Joseph's-Long Island. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. at the Golden Eagles' John A. Danzi Stadium.
