KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Aug. 31, 2024) – The USMMA women's volleyball team defeated visiting Pratt Institute in straight-sets on Saturday morning in the 2024 season-opener at the Liebertz Gymnasium. The scores of the match were 25-17, 25-14, 25-11. The Mariners had a total of 14 service aces throughout the three sets and hit at a .313 clip compared to the Cannoneers' .066 hitting percentage.

Sophia Murray (Conroe, Texas) picked up a double-double in her first career contest, tying the match-high with 10 kills and 14 digs, while also leading all players with five service aces. Senior
Elizabeth Kay (Charleston, W.Va.) tied her career high with 10 kills on a match-best .667 hitting percentage.

Two other plebes also had stellar debuts, as
Sydney Douglas (Herndon, Va.) added eight kills, six digs and four aces, while classmate
Kylie Creech (Osceola, Ind.) and sophomore
Alexa Tipps (Palmdale, Calif.) split the setting duties, dishing out 17 and 15 assists, respectively. Tipps also served up four aces and junior libero
Stephanie Schatzman (Virginia Beach, Va.) tied Murray for the match-high with 14 digs.

For the Cannoneers, senior Olivia Julich recorded a team-best six kills and nine digs, while junior Emily Sontag had nine assists to go along with five kills and six digs.

Up next, the Mariners will travel to Brooklyn College for a mid-week, non-conference match against the Bulldogs on Wednesday night, Sept. 4, beginning at 7 p.m.
