KINGS POINT, N.Y. (March 30, 2024) – The USMMA men's lacrosse team scored 12 goals in the final thirty minutes of play on Saturday, but the offensive firepower proved to be too little, as the Mariners lost a 20-16 contest to rival SUNY Maritime at Brooks Stadium on Saturday. The game was the Skyline Conference-opener for both teams, with the Privateers improving to 5-4 overall and 1-0 in league play. The Mariners fell to 4-4 overall with the loss and 0-1 in conference competition.

For the second consecutive game,
Owen Barcus (Annapolis, Md.) led the Mariners in goals scored as the sophomore attackman netted a team-high four goals. Sophomore midfielder
William Badeer (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and first-year midfielder
Owen Behr (Vestavia Hills, Ala.) each contributed four points with three goals and an assist for USMMA in the losing effort while
Jack Collins (Memphis, Tenn.) and
Sam Winkler (Moorestown, Md.) each added two goals.

Michael Emerick (Damascus, Md.) added a goal and two assists for a three-point day with sophomores
Jack DeTommaso (Massapequa, N.Y.) and
Michael Hofstetter (Deer Park, N.Y.) registering one goal and two assists, respectively.

Chris Neuman (South Huntington, N.Y.) went 9-for-26 on face-offs with six ground ball pickups for the Mariners in the losing effort. The defense was led by seniors
Mark Bredeck (Severna Park, Md.) and
Dom Mirack (Stevensville, Md.), who combined to account for 12 ground balls and four caused turnovers. Sophomore
Michael Valentine IV (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) led the Mariners with four caused turnovers in the game.

Julian Garcia (Lakeway, Texas) stopped eight Maritime shots in the contest. Sophomore netminder
Tucker Swinerton (Weston, Fla.) had one save in his near-five minutes of action to close out the contest to keep the Privateers off the scoreboard any further.

Maritime attackman Parker Reilly led all players with six goals and eight total points while teammates Connor Tomich (5G, 1A) and Patrick Schnell (4G, 1A) combined for 11 points in the win for the Privateers. Joseph Bruno had a goal and an assist while winning 21-of-35 face-offs and picking up nine ground balls. Luke Caliendo added a goal and six ground balls for the Privateers while winning all three of his bouts in the face-off circle as Kieran Hendry recorded a game-high 13 ground ball pickups in the win. Jack Daresta stopped nine shots in the cage for Maritime to record the win.

The visitors scored the first four goals of the game in the opening quarter to jump in front as USMMA was unable to register their first goal on the scoreboard until just over two minutes remaining in the period. DeTommaso led a furious charge back for the Mariners in the final stages of the quarter as his goal started a three-goal spurt that brought the hosts back within a one-goal deficit to begin the second quarter. Maritime answered back by scoring eight times in the second period, including three from Tomich, to collect a 12-4 lead at the halftime break. The Mariners were not to be outdone, however, scoring seven goals of their own in the third quarter as Barcus and Behr each netted a pair while Badeer, Collins, and Winkler all fired shots home in the frame. USMMA trailed by a 13-11 score going into the fourth quarter, but Maritime iced the contest with seven goals over the last fifteen minutes of play to earn the victory.
