Mariners Overcome Slow Start To Topple Rival Bears, 11-7, At Home Wednesday Night

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (March 27, 2024) – The USMMA men's lacrosse team fought off a sluggish start in its rivalry game at home against Coast Guard on Wednesday night, as the Mariners righted their course and defeated the Bears, 11-7, for their second-straight victory over their arch-rival in as many years. With the victory, Merchant Marine improves to 4-3 on the season, while USCGA falls to 1-7.

Game Link Sophomore attackman Owen Barcus (Annapolis, Md.) and junior Jack Collins (Memphis, Tenn.) both tied for the game high with five points, as Barcus netted a season-best five goals, while Collins scored twice and dished out three assists.

Three other Mariners recorded multi-point nights as sophomore Jack DeTommaso (Massapequa, N.Y.) had a goal and two assists and both freshman Owen Behr (Vestavia Hills, Ala.) and sophomore William Badeer (Pittsburgh, Pa.) contributed one goal and one helper apiece. The Bears came out strong, scoring the first three goals of the game in the opening 15 minutes.

Merchant Marine struck back quickly with back-to-back tallies under a minute into the second quarter to make it 3-2 in favor of the visitors. After Coast Guard extended its lead back to two at 9:45, the Mariners would score the next three-straight to close out the first half with a 5-4 advantage.

USMMA outscored the Bears 6-3 over the final half of action, never falling below a three-goal advantage from the three-minute mark of the third on.
