Men’s Lax Falls To Western New England On A Rainy Saturday

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (March 23, 2024) – Despite finishing the first quarter in a 3-3 tie, the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy men's lacrosse team scored just four more goals in the remaining three periods of play, as the Mariners fell to Western New England by a 15-7 score on Saturday. USMMA now holds a 3-4 record on the season, while the host Bears improved to a 4-4 mark overall on the year.
 
Game Link Sophomore attackman Owen Barcus (Annapolis, Md.) scored a team-high three goals for the Mariners in the loss, sharing the lead in points with junior attackman Jack Collins (Memphis, Tenn.). Second-year midfielder William Badeer (Pittsburgh, Pa.) had two goals on the afternoon while freshman midfielder Owen Behr (Vestavia Hills, Ala.) added a goal and an assist for a two-point day. Junior Chris Neuman (South Huntington, N.Y.) went 7-for-19 on face-offs with a team-best five ground ball pickups while also collecting an assist.
 
Sophomore Jack DeTommaso (Massapequa, N.Y.) added an assist and three ground ball pickups, while senior Dom Mirack (Stevensville, Md.) registered four ground balls. In cage for the Mariners, freshman Julian Garcia (Lakeway, Texas) had 11 saves in the loss.
 
Dylan Hanley led Western New England with six points on the strength of three goals and three assists as Jack Houlden found the back of the net five times for the Bears in the win. Six other players added goals for Western New England including Zachary Mein and Joseph Contino, who each registered an assist as well for the home side. Chris Catuosco went 11-for-15 in the face-off circle and led all players with eight ground ball pickups with goalie Carter Randall stopping 11 USMMA shots to pick up the win.
 
The Mariners led the contest by a 2-0 margin in the first two minutes of the opening quarter as Behr and Barcus scored within eight seconds of each other. Barcus added a second goal with ten minutes to play in the frame to give USMMA a 3-1 lead before Western New England scored four straight goals including three in a row from Hanley.
 
USMMA would trail 6-5 going into halftime as Badeer scored with one second left to play in the second quarter, but the Bears scored eight unanswered tallies in the second half including six times in the third quarter, while yielding just two total goals in the final thirty minutes of play.
 
The Mariners will close out non-conference play on Wednesday, March 27, with a rivalry game against Coast Guard at Brooks Stadium beginning at 7 p.m. Live stats and a live video feed of the game will be available with links on the USMMA Men's Lacrosse Schedule Page!
