WESTMINSTER, Md. (Feb. 10, 2024) – Freshman Tyler Withers (Gettysburg, Pa.) and junior Reid Garrison (Broadway, Va.) won their respective brackets to earn individual Centennial Conference Championship to lead the USMMA wrestling team at the conference championship meet today, hosted by McDaniel College. A total of four Mariners finished in third place or better on the day, and Merchant Marine finished in fourth place as a team with 49 points. Ursinus won its second-straight Centennial title after finishing in first place with 93.5 points.

Meet Link Withers also tied with McDaniel's Thomas Monn after a vote of the tournament's Most Outstanding Wrestler. He won all three of his matches as the #3 seed in the 184-pound bracket, starting with a 15-0 tech fall over James Doliscar of Gettysburg in the quarterfinals. He followed that up with a second-period pin in the semis to defeat the #2 seed in the bracket, Ursinus's Max Borton. In the finals against top-seeded Ryan Fairchild of Muhlenberg, Withers pulled out a big 12-0 major decision victory.

Garrison, who earned his second-straight Centennial individual title, was the top seed in the heavyweight bracket and also went 3-0 with a 20-3 tech fall over McDaniel's Ezekiel Gayle in the opening round, followed by a 5-0 decision over the #4 seed, Gettysburg's Simon Taylor, to reach the finals. Ursinus' Jake Ahmad was the #2 seed and Garrison's foe in the championship bout. It was an extremely close title match, but a second-period escape and a penalty against Ahmad for stalling was all Garrison needed for the 2-0 decision victory.

Two other Mariners went 2-1 on the day to earn third-place finishes in their brackets – junior Charlie Lausten (Ashburn, Va.) at 141 and classmate Jimmy Dunagan (Boulder City, Nev.) at 197.

The Mariners return to action next Saturday, Feb. 17, for their final dual meet of the season when they welcome New England College to Kings Point for a 5 p.m. showdown inside the Liebertz Gymnasium. Live links to follow along with the meet will be available on the USMMA Wrestling Schedule Page.
