KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Nov. 9, 2024) – Senior
Talsen Smith (Roseville, Calif.) hauled in nine receptions for 126 yards and a touchdown and set the new Academy record for receiving yards in a single season, but the USMMA football team was defeated by #20 Springfield, 42-7, on Saturday at Tomb Field. The Mariners' record falls to 5-3 (3-3 NEWMAC), while the Pride improve to 9-0 (6-0 NEWMAC) in the victory.

Sophomore QB
Gervy Alota (San Diego, Calif.) completed 9-of-13 attempts for 126 yards and three TDs. All nine of his completions were to his top target, Smith.
On defense, sophomore
Jonathan Hardy (Savannah, Ga.) had 14 total tackles with two coming for a loss, and senior
C.J. Livesay (Morristown, Tenn.) racked up 11 stops, with sophomore
Zatyk Holub (Mount Vernon, Iowa) picking up a sack.
The Pride received the opening kickoff and grabbed the early lead with an 11-play, 76-yard touchdown drive capped off by an Arsen Shtefan rushing touchdown. Kings Point was able to work the ball out past midfield, but ultimately turned it over on downs. Springfield got the ball back and drove down the field into KP territory, before the first quarter ended with the Pride up 7-0.
After a penalty on the Pride, senior QB Jacob Silvester connected with classmate Blane Hart for a 16-yard passing score to make it 14-0. Both sides forced defensive stops on the next two possessions, but towards the end of the second quarter, Springfield's Joseph Cannizaro ripped off a 44-yard touchdown run to help the Pride take a 21-0 lead into the half.
Kings Point was forced to punt on their first possession in the second half, then Springfield drove down for another Cannizaro touchdown to extend their advantage to 28-0.
Springfield opened up a 35-0 edge just into the fourth quarter, before the lone Mariner touchdown came on a 47-yard strike from
Gervy Alota to
Talsen Smith early in the quarter. The Pride went on to punch in one more score, and ultimately won by a final score of 42-7.
For Springfield, grad student Arsen Shtefan carried the ball 28 times for 173 yards and two scores. Fellow fifth-year Joseph Cannizaro totaled 114 yards and two touchdowns on 19 rushes. As a unit, Springfield ran for 386 yards, and threw the ball just four times.
Next up for USMMA is the 44th Annual Secretaries' Cup against arch-rival Coast Guard next Saturday, Nov. 16. Kickoff is scheduled for noon at Tomb Field and the game's broadcast will be featured on ESPN+.
