After a scoreless first half in which Merchant Marine outshot OW, 8-4, but the Panthers held a 3-2 edge in shots on goal, junior
Michael Hofstetter (Deer Park, N.Y.) netted the first goal of the game in the 52nd minute on a header off of a throw-in by senior
Derek Vanasse (Camarillo, Calif.).
Just over six minutes later, sophomore
Patrick Novotny (Fort Worth, Texas) doubled the USMMA lead when he headed in a pass at the near post after a spectacular dribble down the far side by classmate
Andrew Jung (Fairfax, Va.). It was Novotny's team-leading eighth goal of the season and Jung's fourth assist of the year, also a team-best.
In net, sophomore
Ethan Howell (Alexandria, Va.) earned his second-straight shutout after making four saves. His counterpart for Old Westbury, freshman Paul DeGennaro, was tested often and finished the night with nine saves.
Up next, the Mariners step outside of Skyline Conference action for a matchup up at Western Connecticut State this Sunday, Oct. 6. Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. at the Wolves' Westside Athletic Complex.
