Mariners Defeated In Non-Conference Play At Western Connecticut, 1-0

DANBURY, Conn. (Oct. 4, 2024) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy men's soccer team was shut out for just the second time this season and saw its four-game unbeaten streak snapped with a 1-0 defeat at Western Connecticut. USMMA fell to 6-4-2, while Western Connecticut improved to 8-3-2.

Sophomore Ethan Howell (Alexandria, Va.) made three saves in a scoreless first half, while classmate James Castoro (Garden City, N.Y.) stopped one shot and allowed one goal after halftime.
 
Western Connecticut had the first scoring chance of the game in the 5th minute, but a header was stopped by Howell. The USMMA keeper added a save in the 12th minute and made another stop in the 19th minute.
 
The Mariners were held without a shot until the 34th minute when freshman Colin Robertson (Milford, Mich.) missed wide and the game remained scoreless at halftime.
 
USMMA had the first chance after the break as junior Tyson Mallas (Los Angles, Calif.) had a shot blocked in the 52nd minute. The ball found the foot of sophomore Patrick Novotny (Fort Worth, Texas), but his follow-up seconds later was also blocked. Novotny then missed high on another chance in the 55th minute.
 
A blocked attempt from freshman Cal Lutz (Charlotte, N.C.) in the 61st minute created another quick follow-up opportunity for Novotny, who missed high.
 
After being held without a second-half shot until an off-target effort sailed high in the 63rd minute, the Wolves broke through for a 1-0 lead with a goal in the 75th minute.
 
The Mariners were denied a chance at a quick equalizer in the 80th minute as junior John Germain (Cornwall, N.Y.) had a shot saved and Western Connecticut held on for the 1-0 victory.
 
The Mariners host Skyline foe Mount St. Mary for a 7 p.m. game on Wednesday, Oct. 9, at Bartoszek Field.
