Kings Point, N.Y. (Oct. 3, 2024) - The Mariners snapped a near two-year streak of the Valiants not dropping conference sets, but ultimately fell to the defending Skyline champs in four sets.
Box Score
Sydney Douglas (Herndon, Va.) finished with nine kills on 37 swings to lead all Mariners on the evening, with Elizbeth Kay (Charleston, W. Va.),
Maddie Mayer (Aurora, Colo.), and
Erin Stillinger (Keller, Texas) collecting four kills each.
Stephanie Schatzman (Virginia Beach, Va.) recorded 34 digs, and Mayer blocked four shots.
Manhattanville largely controlled the first set of the evening, scoring the first six points before a timeout by KP. The Valiants held USMMA at arms length, running their lead up to 16-6 at one point. Tony Nocera's side battled hard and cut the deficit to five points late, but Manhattanville won the first set 25-18.
The second set was a much different story, with Merchant Marine playing off the front foot and grabbing a 10-4 lead early. Naturally, the Valiants did not let the set get away from them. They cut the Mariner lead to three points a couple teams and even as close as two points at 24-22, then to 24-23. But Elizabeth Kay closed the set with a kill to level the match at one set apiece. That was the first set that Manhattanville had lost in Skyline play since October 19th, 2022 against St. Joseph's - Long Island. The Mariners also held Manhattanville to just a .020 hitting percentage in the second set.
Armed with the momentum and a little extra emotion, KP opened up set three with a 6-4 run featuring three kills from Sydney Douglas. Manhattanville responded with a 6-1 stretch of their own to turn the tides, and establish a 10-6 advantage. Neither side could maintain momentum for the final chunk of the set, but the Valiants held on to that four-point cushion, finally ending the set at 25-16.
The fourth set was extremely competitive, with the two teams battling to 9-9 early on. Douglas had two more kills in that action, with Kylie Creech and Liz Kay each picking up a kill as well. The back-and-forth nature continued, with the two sides locking up at 14-14 later on. A quick 3-1 spurt by Manhattanville had them up 19-15 late, but Merchant Marine quickly got within a point at 20-19. However, the Valiants closed with four straight points to win the fourth set 25-20, taking home a hard-fought win.
The Mariners hit the road to take on St. Joseph's - Long Island on Wednesday, October 9th, in Patchogue, N.Y..
