Mariners End Regular Season With 1-1 Draw Against Mount St. Vincent On Senior Day

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Oct. 26, 2024) – The USMMA men's soccer team played Skyline Conference opponent Mount St. Vincent to a 1-1 tie in its regular season-finale on Saturday at Bartoszek Field on Senior Day. The draw moves the Mariners' record to 9-5-3 (6-2-3 Skyline), while the Dolphins move to 10-5-3 (5-4-1 Skyline).

Prior to the game Merchant Marine celebrated its eight seniors with a special Senior Day ceremony honoring Tony Samaha (Vestavia Hills, Ala.), Tyler Damaré (Slidell, La.), Arthur Dozier (Southampton, N.J.), Fensom Hensley (Cumberland, R.I.), Jason Healey (King George, Va.), Gio Tallini (Westbury, N.Y.), Derek Vanasse (Camarillo, Calif.) and Wes Ferry (Newport, N.C.).

Game Link After a scoreless first half, the Dolphins found the back of the net just over a minute into the second when freshman Javier Trujillo one-touched a pass from classmate Amos Bignotti and fired a shot past sophomore keeper Ethan Howell (Alexandria, Va.).

The visitors' lead did not last long, however, as Vanasse answered right back just over three minutes later when he converted on a pass from the end line by junior Tyson Mallas (Los Angeles, Calif.) and fired the ball into at the near post.

The Mariners kept attacking with five-straight shots over the next eight minutes, including three that had to be turned aside by Dolphin keeper freshman Samuel Reine.

Both teams had some chances as the game crept closer to full time, but none were closer than when UMSV almost found the game-winner in the final minute on a free kick by junior Donovan Speer that was kicked softly, almost looking like a cross that was thought to be going over the net, but hit off the crossbar.

Howell finished the game with two saves, while Reine had four for the Dolphins.

The Mariners will now await the conclusion of the entire Skyline season on Wednesday, Oct. 30. After that the full bracket will be set for the 2024 Skyline Championship Tournament which begins on Saturday, Nov. 2 (or Sunday, Nov. 3 if Yeshiva qualifies).
