Merchant Marine got off to a hot start in the first set of the evening, jumping out to a 12-4 advantage with freshman
Jenny Dyke (Grand Rapids, Mich.), Douglas, and senior
Elizabeth Kay (Charleston, W. Va.) all contributing a kill. That seemed to zap the life from the Bearcats, as the Mariners then rattled off a 9-2 run to push their lead to 20-6. The Bearcats did rally for five straight points late, but KP won the first set 25-11.
Â
Baruch did record the opening point to begin the second set, before USMMA ran off four straight. Tipps then got in a groove with her passing, as she quickly dished out four assists to help key another 9-2 run as the Mariners pulled in front 13-4. Baruch never got any closer than an eight point deficit as King's Point sprinted to the finish with a 25-10 win in the second set.
Â
The Bearcats came out much sharper in the third set, with their backs against the wall down two sets to none. They held a 5-2 lead early in the action against Merchant Marine, but Mayer picked up a couple kills shortly after that to bring the set level at 7-7. Baruch wound up hurting their own cause after that, as the Mariners went on a 9-3 run without recording a kill. That trend continued through the end of the third set, with Merchant Marine closing out the match on a 9-3 run to win in straight sets.
Â
Next up for USMMA is Senior Day this Saturday, Oct. 26th, at home against Skyline opponent Old Westbury. Festivities are set to begin at 11 a.m. inside the Liebertz Gymnasium.
