Merchant Marine raced out to a 9-3 lead early in the opening set, taking advantage of a strong service game.
Alexa Tipps and
Maddie Mayer each notched a couple aces in that stretch. The Bears cut the gap to four points shortly after, but
Erin Stillinger picked up a couple kills in a 5-2 Mariner run to establish a 16-9 lead. St. Joe's could not get any closer than that, as USMMA finished out the set on a 10-4 tear to win the opener 25-13.
The second set opened in a much more competitive fashion, with KP and SJ-BK battling to a 7-7 draw early on. The clubs knotted up again at 12 points apiece, before Merchant Marine found a groove. They ripped off a 9-2 run featuring two more aces from Tipps, and a couple kills from Kay to establish a 20-14 lead, ultimately winning the set 25-16.
After splitting the first four points,
Virginia Robert (Lynchburg, Va.) helped key an 8-1 run for the Mariners from the service line. The Bears routinely struggled to return her serves, although she did not officially record an ace as KP jumped in front 10-3. St. Joe's got as close as three points when they trailed 13-10, but USMMA kept them at arms' length the rest of the way to secure a straight-set victory, winning the third 25-18.
Next up for USMMA, they hit the road to take on Sarah Lawrence College, on Tuesday, October 22nd in Bronxville, N.Y.
