KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Oct. 15, 2024) – USMMA volleyball came up just short in a highly competitive, albeit straight-set loss to Farmingdale State, 25-20, 25-22, 25-23, on Tuesday night at the Liebertz Gymnasium. The Mariners are now 10-6 (3-2 Skyline) on the season, while the Rams improved to 11-4 (5-0 Skyline).
Â
Freshman
Sophia Murray (Conroe, Texas) led the Mariners with eight kills on 24 swings (.208), with classmate
Sydney Douglas (Herndon, Va.) behind her at five kills, along with fellow plebe
Maddie Mayer (Centennial, Colo.). Douglas added nine digs as well, but it was junior libero
Stephanie Schatzman (Virginia Beach, Va.) who paced USMMA with 29 digs. Freshman
Kylie Creech (Osceola, Ind.) dished out 16 helpers in the match.
Â
The two sides set the tone for a tense battle in set number one, working back and forth to 11-11 each way.
Sydney Douglas had a couple kills in that stretch for the Mariners, with Stephanie Nemecek and Samantha Russo each picking up two more for the Rams. The teams continued to trade points, to 14-14 and 17-17, before FSC opened up a 21-17 run late in the set. KP got as close as three points, but could not get over the hump as Farmingdale State nabbed the first set 25-20.
Â
Farmingdale opened the next set strong, racing out to a 7-1 lead behind a couple kills from Mikayla Profeta. The lead got up to 10-3 Rams, before the Mariners started to find their groove offensively. Stillinger and Murray each chipped in a kill over a 9-5 Merchant Marine run, with two blocks and an ace from
Kylie Creech helping cut the FSC lead to just two points. After another long stretch of trading points, the Mariners finally brought the set level at 21-21, before
Maddie Mayer's block gave USMMA a one point edge. Unfortunately, Farmingdale State scored the final four points to win the set 25-22.
Â
Down two sets to the Rams, Merchant Marine needed a strong start to set three. It was once again a back-and-forth beginning to the action, with neither side able to establish much of a lead. The Rams grabbed a 9-6 advantage at one point, before four straight from the Mariners saw them jump in front 10-9 with Mayer recording a block and a kill. Neither side held more than a two-point lead in the third set, with ties at 11, 13, 14, 16, 17, 18, 19, 21, and 23. But for the Rams, Profeta finished strong with the final two kills of the evening to wrap up a 25-23 set win, and a 3-0 match win for Farmingdale State.
Â
Next up for USMMA, they host St. Joseph's-Brooklyn on Thursday night, Oct. 17th, back at the Liebertz Gymnasium.
