Junior
Reid Garrison (Broadway, Va.) won all four of his matches on the day for the Mariners, including pinfall wins over Oneonta's Jhordyn Innocent and Alvernia's Brian Czaus at the 285-pound weight class. Garrison went into the meet as the thirteenth-ranked wrestler in the country in that specific class, according to The Open Mat. Four other wrestlers posted two victories for USMMA at the dual meet, featuring two wins via pinfall for sophomore
Wesley Wydick (Utica, Ohio) at the 133-pound discipline. Picking up a pair of wins in addition to Wydick were freshman
Colin Dragon (Richmond Hill, Ga.) at the 125-pound weight class, junior
Charlie Lausten (Ashburn, Va.) at 141 and fellow third-year
Eddie Pinc (Medina, Ohio) at 149.
In the team's match versus Oneonta to start the day, Lausten and Pinc recorded 11 points in consecutive weight classes via technical fall and pinfall to put the Mariners ahead by an 11-6 score. Oneonta, however, would go on to win the next five disciplines before Garrison's first pinfall of the day ended the scoring with the USMMA behind by a 28-17 margin.
Against Johnson & Wales, Dragon recorded a match-opening 14-6 major decision win over Ryan O'Rourke to put the Mariners ahead by a score of 4-0. USMMA would come up short in the next six matches to trail 19-4 going into the 184-pound weight class. Junior
Cade Cowley (Boulder City, Nev.) and first-year
Grant Mathias (Rockwood, Pa.) took back-to-back bouts via 9-7 decision and pinfall, respectively to bring the Mariners within a 19-13 deficit. Garrison would claim the final match via forfeit to tie the score at 19-all; ultimately, however, JWU's six victories in the dual would earn them the tiebreaker point.
The Mariners won eight of ten matches versus Camden County in the teams' third dual meet of the day. Three of the wins came via pinfall, including at the 184-pound weight class where freshman
Tyler Withers (Gettysburg, Pa.) recorded his team-leading tenth pinfall of the season in just over a minute of mat time. Wydick and freshman
Hugo Frazier Jr. (Huntington, Md.) were the other wrestlers to record pinfalls at 133 and 197 pounds, respectively.
In the final match of the day against Alvernia, Dragon recorded a 10-7 simple decision with Wydick following up by claiming a pinfall to give the Mariners a 9-0 lead. Alvernia then won six of the next eight matches---with Pinc's major decision and Garrison's pinfall win being the outliers---as the Mariners fell by a 29-19 scoreline.
The USMMA wrestling team returns to action in Kings Point on Jan. 13, hosting the Mariner Duals inside Liebertz Gymnasium. The Mariners will face Rhode Island College, Southern Maine, NYU and Hunter College in the daylong dual meet which begins at 3 p.m.
