KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Jan. 22, 2024) – The USMMA wrestling team lost in its Centennial Conference-opener to visiting Ursinus College on Monday night inside the Liebertz Gymnasium by the final score of 28-12. The defeat drops the Mariners' dual meet record to 4-5 (0-1 Centennial), while the Bears improve to 6-2 (1-0 Centennial) with the victory.

After falling behind 4-0 due to a major decision in favor of Ursinus at 125, the Mariners stormed back to take back-to-back bouts at 133 and 141.

Sophomore
Wesley Wydick (Utica, Ohio) got Merchant Marine on the board with a 6-2 decision at 133, before junior
Charlie Lausten (Ashburn, Va.) earned a first period pin in 2:46 to put the Mariners ahead 9-4.

However, the Bears went on to win the next six bouts, including two technical falls and two major decisions, to take a commanding 28-9 lead, clinching the team victory with a major at 184.

Junior
Reid Garrison (Broadway, Va.) finished the night off on a positive note for USMMA, as he won his heavyweight matchup by way of a 4-1 decision, bringing the final score to 28-12.

Up next for the Mariners is a trip down to Baltimore, Md., for a pair of Centennial Conference matches this Saturday, Jan. 27, at Johns Hopkins University. They will take on the host Blue Jays beginning at 12-noon, before a neutral-site matchup with Muhlenberg College that will begin at roughly 1:30 p.m. Live video for the day will be available
